Delivery of Principal Designer role within high security, live Aviation environment.
We were selected by our client, British Airways, based on a strong track record in construction-based health and safety and extensive experience in the aviation industry. This project involved the renovation of washroom facilities at Heathrow Airport.
With significant expertise in managing critical safety concerns, such as asbestos management, we also utilised our extensive experience in projects within the aviation environment. An dedicated health and safety consultant was seconded to the project, based on their knowledge, diverse experience and ability to successfully fulfil the principal designer role.
Working in a live airside environment presented several challenges, with security being of utmost importance. Effective communication and a collaborative approach were also essential due to the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including Millar Management Architects, who were a key collaborator.
Our responsibilities included gathering and producing PCI, reviewing asbestos reports and related documentation, attending DTMs (Design Team Meetings), reviewing CPPs (Construction Phase Plans), providing advice, reviewing design risk assessments, offering guidance to designers on CDM (Construction Design Management) compliance, compiling the Health and Safety file, and reviewing O&Ms (Operation and Maintenance Manuals).
Our consultant skilfully managed security protocols facilitated effective communication among all parties, and handled critical health and safety aspects, such as including electrical safety, asbestos risk and general construction welfare considerations.
